Lee Murwira started off as a street market trader while studying at university, producing street wear which resonated with a loyal local audience base. When it was time to expand, Lee was determined to keep Portsmouth as his headquarters. Building on the success of his streetwear brand and his commitment to keeping Portsmouth at the heart of his business, Lee channelled the same local pride and authenticity into the creation of Gym Athlete.
Why Gym Athlete
Lee began to develop Gym Athlete in response to the realisation that the gym wear on the market did not authentically represent the identity of the people he saw in his local gym. He wanted people to have affordable and high-quality gym wear options that reflected their commitment and enhanced their self-esteem.
"I couldn't find something I felt represented me and my time at the gym. So, I asked around at the gym and it seemed to me that people weren't giving them themselves the respect for what they were doing and the time they were putting in."
Lee studied existing brands and realised he wanted Gym Athlete to be a brand that stands for identity, quality, and self-respect. He explained:
"We needed the right product and the right price point which resonates with the community - a point that was between the big brands and fast fashion which offered value, quality and function."
Gym Athlete at Victory Business Centre
The result is a successful online business selling quality and distinctive gym wear in vibrant colours all over the world. Gym Athlete moved into Victory Business Centre two years ago; a move Lee feels has benefited his business enormously.
"The advantages of being part of the Enterprise Centre are absolutely countless", he says. "There are no restrictions on access times which means all deliveries arrive safely, and that I can come in whenever I need to. I can also use the conference rooms for meetings, so don't need to spend on hiring space. I'm operating on my own, and being here means I don't have to worry about posting my products, I package them up, it's all sorted in reception and taken from there.
"One of the greatest advantages is the access to dedicated business support. Whenever challenges arise, I know I can reach out and get tailored assistance focused specifically on the needs of small businesses. That kind of targeted support is incredibly reassuring.
"The business eco-system within the building is a real asset. There's a strong network of businesses here that actively collaborate and share resources. For example, we've already discussed working together to share shipping containers in response to rising tariff costs - a practical, cost-saving solution that's come out of collective problem-solving. This ecosystem is invaluable. We exchange advice and share opportunities and ideas. I think this thriving support network gives us a real competitive edge."
